Baby Boy Nursery

My dear friend Kristin is having her first boy after two girls.  I was so excited to do her nursery and make it feel vintage boy.  We talked about what she wanted, shopped a little together, then I found some great accessories from my favorite places. Here it is!

 

 

Love this collage wall.  The three prints in the white frames I printed for free and framed in the $4.99 Virserum frame from Ikea.  The red and black frames were $5 each from Forget Me Not.  Love that store.  I found the little ship wheel for $3 from Hobby Lobby.  It fits perfectly layered in the red frame.  I love layering with open frames.  The black frame had this ugly flower in the center.  I simply popped it out and replaced it with another free printable.  The red mirror was absolutely perfect from Hobby Lobby for $15.  The "J" is perfect for Baby Boy Johnson as his parents aren't sure what his first name will be.  In the center of the wall, I framed my favorite quote from Winnie the Pooh.  I layered scrapbook paper on a canvas with spray adhesive.  Then I layered the quote and modge podged the top.  I added the open barnwood frame for the perfect touch of roughness.  The vintage sign was also from Hobby Lobby and is the perfect statement for all things boy.  To finish it off, I added the mustard frame with a simple polka dot scrapbook paper insert and the chalkboard tags.  Love, love, love this wall!!! (And yes, I know I used "perfect" quite a bit in this explanation.  But it really turned out just as I had hoped it would.)

 

 

On the shelf, we did two jars filled with these vintage wooden rods and marbles.  The white barnwood frame and red fire truck complete the grouping.  (The fire truck was only $12 from Hobby Lobby).

 



I did a simple grey and white chevron curtain for the pair of windows.  Chevron is so "hot" right now and adds the perfect pattern for the room.  I love the grey mixed with the blue.

 



 

I so wanted to bring a fun pattern into the room.  I made this chevron fabric backed frame and added the small pennant banners on top.  I love it as it adds color, dimension, pattern, and whimsy.  It is the perfect piece of art.

 

I love the other grouping of the free printable in the navy frame with the green frame and yellow vintage airplane. I got all three frames from Forget Me Not for $14. They were a steal and work perfectly with the bedding. The plane was another steal at Hobby Lobby for $13.

 

Kristin got this giraffe when she found out she was having a boy.  It plays the baby's heartbeat.  I paired it with two of her existing frames.  We'll put Baby J's picture in the tall one and his baby announcement in the other one.  We found this jack at Hobby Lobby and had to have it.  I love the color, size, shape, etc.

I loved Kristin's reaction when she walked into the room.  She loved it,and said it was more than she even imagined.  That is always what I hope happens.  Now she's ready for baby. 

New Wall Grouping

I spent last week helping Shaun redo her family picture wall.  She bought the new shelf and wanted help refreshing her space.  With lots of accessories from Rod Works, I went to work.  I love how it turned out.  I sprayed four of her existing frames cream to tie back into the shelf.  It all ties back to family.

I changed up the clock wall by adding two framed fabric swatches.  It brought such fun texture to the wall.  All of the accessories on the sideboard, with the exception of the cream pitcher, came from other areas in the house.  Shaun's dad worked for the phone company and had the old phones in a garage.  They are such great pieces to display!

I added a new window treatment to the kitchen with the same colors from the family room.  She loved the fabric, so I just whipped out the curtain:)  She's so happy with the update, so that makes it a success.

Breanna's House

For the last three weeks, we've been working on redoing this space:

Here's the before pictures of Breanna's family room and kitchen.  They had great bones and just needed sparkle added through accessorizing.

Here's the finished product!  We absolutely love the mantel.  We found this fabric that Breanna loved, so I made it into artwork by building a frame and stretching the fabric over it!  It was the perfect statement for the room.  The mantel decor came together beautifully with a little help from all of our favorite home decor stores.  The drapes were just what the room needed to bring it all together.   I got a screaming deal on the fabric from fabric.com.  It was 110" fabric, so I only needed three yards to do all three windows.  (I only paid $43!)

Forget Me Not had the darling floating frames and prints.  I found those on my way to meet with Breanna for the first time and knew that those were our jumping off point.  I made her new pillows with coordintaing fabrics that tied all the rooms together.

In the kitchen, we updated the top of the cabinets with whiteware and glass vignettes.  We added hints of greenery, and the turquoise mirror to tie in the new kitchen curtain.

Thanks to TaiPan and our own resourcefulness, we created a whole new look for under $90.

A Tween Room to Scream for

Last week, Kallee and I decorated our friend Karri's girls room.  She had purchased the bedding and many of the accessories, but needed help putting it all together.  Enter Kallee and I to do some magic.  We bought the circle mirror and layered the initial on top.  We added the ribbon and made it the perfect statement above each girl's bed.

In the bathroom, we added the ribbons and the cute queen crown.

Our favorite touch was the floating frame wall.  We got all of them from Hobby Lobby.  Isn't it perfect with the turquoise wall?

Love how we accessorized the top of the dresser.

 This dresser was Karri's as a girl.  We just added accessories on top and added the "sconces" on either side of the mirror.  They were from Hobby Lobby and added such great sparkle to the room.

Karri had this side table and mirror and wanted to incorporate it somehow.  She had all of the accessories in other parts of her house.  We just gathered and grouped them in new ways.  Look around your house.  You don't always have to buy new things.  Repurpose!!

We loved this little layered statement.  It was a metal flower wall hanging from Hobby Lobby.  We just layered it on one of the white floating frames.  This is a super easy design technique and makes such a bigger impact.  Love layering!

A Sacred Space for Grandmother

Last week, I had the pleasure of redoing Grandmother Kelley's room.  She had been in the hospital after a heart attack, and told Shaun she wanted me to come in and completely change her room.  Although she passed away before she could see it, Shaun still wanted me to finish it.  It was an honor to do so, and I could feel her spirit in the room when I revealed it to Shaun.  Here it is.

The quilt is a vintage one from Grandmother's house.  I took it with me to Home Fabrics and found four coordinating fabrics that worked perfectly.  I made the quilted shams, the throw pillows, and new drapes.  I added new artwork from Hobby Lobby.  The center picture was premade.  The side pics I put together with mats, prints, and frames.

I loved accessorizing her room.  This is one of my favorite groupings.  I love these vintage frames from TaiPan, and can't wait to put a picture of Grandmother in it.



This is my favorite grouping in the room.  The lamp was absolutely perfect and the one Grandmother liked best.  I made the floral arrangement for $14.  I loved the larger vintage frame, the clock, and the little birds.  I know it she would have loved it.



The curtain fabric was the perfect choice for this shabby chic room.  I found the metal signs at Rod Works.  They were such a great shape, color, and had the perfect message.



I love how the room came together and that Shaun loved it.  We stood in the room the night Grandmother died just talking about her.  In the quiet, Shaun whispered to me how much she missed her mother.  We hugged with tears streaming down our faces feeling Grandmother's spirit with us.  It truly is a sacred space.

From Red to Blue

It was so much fun to redo Kelly's front room. For years, she had a deep red wall. As she was over the red phase, it was time for a change.

  Enter the blue, green motif I envisioned with a little help from my Ballard Design catalog.  We loved this deep blue color for her walls.  It is Planetarium from Home Depot's Behr Ultra Paint line.  Don't you love the contrast?  I loved this artwork from Hobby Lobby.  We paid $50 for it.  Unbelievable price for such a great piece.  I paired it with my favorite sunburst mirror and the custom music pages art piece from the last post.  In order to keep the room from feeling too cold, I warmed it with the oil rubbed bronze, brass and wood accents.

I loved the simple accents we used.  Kelly teaches piano, so she didn't want a lot on the piano.  The pitcher is the perfect place to store pencils for her students.  She already had the cute birds, and they make a nice grouping with the wooden metronome.

I love the simple tray of balls on the other side of the piano.

This wall became such a great focal point as soon as you walk through the door.

We looked everywhere for the perfect pedestal table for beside the couch.  All the ones we found were too high.  Kelly found this gem in her sister's basement.  It was oak, so I painted it cream and gave it a new life.  Isn't it perfect?  I love the new lamp paired with the accessories.  The two old books were the perfect blue and green for the room.

I love the fabric for the two pillows.  The embroidered pillow came from Target.  The patterned fabric was from Hobby Lobby and was the perfect shade of green to add to the room.

For her entry, Kelly bought a new cabinet from Hobby Lobby.  She had all of the accessories except the greenery and the stone artichoke.  I just grouped them in a different way to make it balanced and work with scale and proportion.

We moved her family picture and Proclamation onto this wall by the temple to make a grouping.

This little thought in the corner is one of my favorites.  I love the little pop of green in the topiary mixed with the dark wood of the vase and the gold of the clock.  Don't be afraid to mix colors and finishes.  As you can see, it works. 

The fabric for Kelly's curtains was my favorite statement in the room.  It looked so rich and added such warmth to the space.  I love the geometric print.  They were just what that room needed and tied everything, including the new rug, together!

Kristin's Front Room Makeover

Kristin's front room felt very dark.  She has orange couches that we couldn't change.  So, I brought in light fabrics to bring a whole new feeling to the room.  I found this fabric for her curtains again at fabric.com.  It was $9.99/yd.  As we needed to make 2-109" curtain panels, we found a bargain and only spent $65 for this fabric. 



The curtains added such light and airyness to the room.  Kristin wasn't quite sure about the fabric but trusted me.  She loved how they turned out!



 I picked these two fabrics to coordinate with our window fabric.  The floral had the perfect touch of orange as to not ignore the couches, but had such a lightness with the mixture of other colors.  I love the green geometric.  Don't be afraid to mix patterns.

I love the piano accessories.  It was such a difference from before. We brought in the green and turquoise from the kitchen colors to tie the two rooms together.

We found some great orange accessories, like this pitcher.



We rearranged her existing artwork and added a few framed quotes to balance out her picture wall.  She already had the frames, and so it cost absolutely nothing!  Love it when that happens.



Lastly, we created this little tray for the front room table.  I love the clock with the pop of turquoise.  Her front room is now bright and cheery.  As Nate Berkus says, "It rises up to meet her" when she walks in the door.
